said
that
regulators

starting
to
consider

whether
technology
companies
that
provide
financial
services
should,
like
banks,
beregulated
more
heavily.

comment
from
the
chairman
of
one
of
the
world’s
biggest
lenders
underlines
the
risk
forlarge
technology
groups
such
as
Alibaba
in
China
and
Apple
in
the
US
that
they
could
facestricter
regulation
as
they
move
further
into
financial
services.

Flint
said
in
a
speech
at
Cass
Business
School
in
London
on
Thursday: “Regulators
allaround
the
world
are
reflecting
on
the
extent
that
internet
companies
are
providing
bankingservices
and
whether
they
should
be
regulated
as
such,
or
whether
they
are
just
providingaccess
to
banking
services.”

view
is
that
most

want

rules

“not
something
they
want
to
take
on”.

question

starting

grapple
with.”

Alibaba’s
financial
affiliate
company

MYBank,

launch
in
January
of
WeBank,
an
internetlending
joint
venture
led
by
Tencent.
